# Duke Energy

> How to connect Duke Energy accounts to Nectar using email MFA forwarding.

## Connection method: Email MFA forwarding

Duke Energy sends a one-time verification code via email when it detects a login from an unfamiliar device or IP address. Since Nectar logs in from its own servers, this triggers an email code on most login attempts.

<Tip>
  **Best option: Disable MFA if your organization allows it.** Duke Energy's MFA is risk-based and
  may be configurable in your account security settings. If you can turn off "email verification on
  login," Nectar can connect without any forwarding setup.
</Tip>

## Setup with email forwarding

If MFA cannot be disabled, set up email forwarding so Nectar receives the verification codes:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Start a new connection or reconnect">
    From [Data Input > Connections](/platform/data-input/connections), click **New connection** and select **Duke Energy**, or click **Reconnect** on an existing connection showing **MFA Token Expired**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter your credentials">
    Provide your Duke Energy username and password — the same credentials you use at [duke-energy.com/my-account/sign-in](https://www.duke-energy.com/my-account/sign-in).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose MFA forwarding type">
    The wizard presents two options:

    * **Managed forwarding** (recommended): Nectar provides a unique email address. Update your Duke Energy account's email address to this Nectar-provided address so codes are sent directly to us.
    * **Customer-inbox forwarding**: Keep your current email on Duke Energy, and set up an auto-forwarding rule in your email client to forward Duke Energy verification emails to Nectar.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Configure on the Duke Energy portal">
    **For managed forwarding:** Log in to Duke Energy > **My Profile** > **Contact Information** > update the email address to the Nectar-provided address.

    **For customer-inbox forwarding:** Create a forwarding rule in your email client that forwards messages from `duke-energy.com` or `duke-energy@email.duke-energy.com` to the Nectar-provided forwarding address.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm the setup">
    Nectar triggers a test login. Duke Energy sends a code to the configured email, Nectar receives it, and the connection moves to **Connected**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Important notes

* Duke Energy's verification codes expire quickly (typically within 10 minutes). Forwarding delays from corporate email systems can cause codes to expire before Nectar receives them. Managed forwarding is more reliable.
* Duke Energy may also show a "Continue Without Passkey" prompt or request you set up passkeys — this can be dismissed during the connection flow.
* If you see a reCAPTCHA challenge, wait a moment and try again. Duke Energy uses Cloudflare protection that occasionally triggers on automated logins.

## Troubleshooting

| Issue                                       | Solution                                                                                                     |
| ------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| "MFA Token Expired" keeps returning | Your forwarding rule may be broken. Check that forwarding is active and the email address matches exactly. |
| Codes arrive but connection still fails | Codes may be expiring before delivery. Switch to managed forwarding for faster delivery. |
| "Website Down" status | Duke Energy's portal occasionally has outages. The connection retries automatically. |
| Prompted for "Let us know what to call you" | This is a first-time setup screen. Complete it on the Duke Energy portal directly, then reconnect in Nectar. |
